4. Why is Matariki important?Because it’s maori Traditionally, indicated by how bright the stars were. Matariki provides an ideal opportunity to explore the ways that people pass on and sustain aspects of their culture and heritage.

Why should we have a public holiday for Matariki?Renowned maori astronomer Dr Rangi Mātāmua said Matariki had increasingly become a part of maori national identity, and making it a public holiday would encourage more people to learn about it. He said many people still celebrate Matariki before the cluster was even visible in the sky

6. Why should it replace this public holiday?The public holidays are generally days of celebration, like the anniversary of a significant historical event, or can be a religious celebration
